Cllr Oisín O'Connor

Green Party Councillor for Glencullen-Sandyford, including Ballinteer, Stepaside, Kilternan, Leopardstown, Ballyogan & Glenamuck

I’m very happy that the National Transport Authority have applied for planning permission for a new Stepaside bus shelter on Kilgobbin Road that will serve the wider communities of Belarmine and Stepaside. You can see the planning application including drawings and plans here.

In early 2024, I made a number of requests for new bus shelters in our area including this one on Kilgobbin Road. At the time, the NTA replied to me with the good news that they were starting the process to install one on Kilgobbin Road off the back of my request.

You can read the full details of the planning application for the new bus shelter on Kilgobbin Road on Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown’s Planning portal here. You can make a submission for a €20 fee, but I have already made a submission in support of it with the following points (you can read my whole submission here):

  • The shelter should have seating.
  • The shelter should not use any LED lighting on any advertising panels as this is a residential area.
  • The shelter should have a real time information panel. There are many older residents in this area who rely on the bus and a real time display would be very helpful for them.
  • The shelter should have a green roof, to be compliant under section 12.4.14 of the County Development Plan, which I put in myself. It says “Taxi and Bus shelters should consider the incorporation of green roofs with pollinators”. We also have to take into account our DLR Biodiversity Action Plan 2021-2025 when making these decisions.

You can read the list of bus shelters I requested here along with the NTA’s response to my requests. I’ve requested a number of other bus shelters since then too. If there are more bus stops you feel should be converted into bus shelters, please get in touch and let me know: [email protected]

Want to know more about Bus Connects changes coming to our area? The 63 is being replaced by the L26 (Kilternan to Blackrock) and the L27 (Leopardstown Valley to Dún Laoghaire). Learn more about the L26 bus here and the L27 bus here.
