Cllr Oisín O'Connor

Green Party Councillor for Glencullen-Sandyford, including Ballinteer, Stepaside, Kilternan, Leopardstown, Ballyogan & Glenamuck

I’m happy to share an update on the new library for Ballyogan after a site visit there today. The library is expected to be opened up for the community “before the summer” which is as close to a timeline we have at the moment. Also see the new plans here for the Samuel Beckett Sports Campus, out for public consultation in March/April 2024.

UPDATE (6th March 2024): Council officials have updated me to say that the opening date for the library is now expected to be November 2024. The major internal construction works expected to be finished in April/May and then works will get started on getting books, shelves, equipment set up. It’s been decided that the library won’t open until everything is in place.

This will be a fantastic local facility for everyone living in Ballyogan, The Gallops, Clay Farm, Carrickmines, Kilternan and all the surrounding areas.

The new library in Ballyogan will have the latest facilities and is specifically designed to be a welcoming space that has something for everyone, no matter your age or ability. It will include:

  • plenty of books
  • culture space for performances seating 60-70
  • computer stations including ones specially designed for parents trying to simultaneously entertain the little ones
  • sensory space
  • children’s play space
  • podcast/musician studio
  • dedicated teen space
  • various seating options
  • meeting room
  • changing room and buggy storage area
  • fully accessible including Changing Places bathroom

The new Ballyogan library will be located here at the Samuel Beckett Civic Campus. You can already sign up for a library card with DLR Libraries that works at all the council’s libraries.

The next phase will be a new sports campus with gym, swimming pool and upgraded sports pitches. We expect that the plans for this will go out to public consultation this February and following that, to be presented to councillors for approval in May.
