Great news at last, we are getting a zebra crossing on Ballinteer Avenue that connects Ballintyre to the shops, services and bus stop on the other side of the road.
This is something that I’ve been working on for a number of years now, as a high priority to make it safer for all road users on Ballinteer Avenue near the shops. This will be a really well-used crossing especially be residents of Ballintyre, but also people coming from Kingston, Grangefield and Harold’s Grange Road who walk down through Ballintyre to get to Super Valu, the 14 bus etc.
There will be ramped zebra crossing with ESB-powered “Belisha beacons” and drainage connections, located near to the entrance of Ballintyre Walk on Ballinteer Avenue. A contractor has now been appointed and according to the council’s traffic engineer, the works are scheduled to be completed in Q2. Bear in mind that at the beginning of February I was told it would be end of February, beginning of March, and previous timelines I was given were missed also.
Are there more road safety issues in our area that you would like me to work on? Please let me know about the issue and we can look at solutions: ooconnor@cllr.dlrcoco.ie
Background to the Ballinteer Avenue zebra crossing
I have been asking for this for years, including behind the scenes with officials and putting formal motions and questions down on the council agenda. There were times when it seemed just getting on zebra crossing was going to be long-fingered forever, but I wasn’t going to take no for an answer on this one.

More road safety for Ballinteer
Other road safety initiatives that are coming for Ballinteer that I’m working to keep progressing:
- Safe Routes to School programme at Our Lady’s Schools and St John’s Church: this is to include more safe crossings and improved footpaths so that it’s safer to walk to school. Designs are to be published in the coming months for public consultation.
- Active Travel on Grange Road: this is a long overdue project to make the stretch of road from Grange Road from Brehon Field Road to Marlay Park safer. It will make pedestrian crossings much safer and more usable, improve footpaths, possibly add at least one new pedestrian crossing, reduce speeds and connect up the cycling infrastructure. I’ve been told detailed plans will be out this year for public consultation.
- Fixing safety issues where the Brehon Field Road cycle tracks links into Old Ballinteer Road: I have proposed a solution to this that has been refused by the council but will keep trying to improve safety here.
- Local safety improvements: I’m continuing to work on more localised road safety improvements, such as in estates and footpaths in the area. Please let me know if there are local safety issues you would like to see: ooconnor@cllr.dlrcoco.ie
