Cllr Oisín O'Connor

Green Party Councillor for Glencullen-Sandyford, including Ballinteer, Stepaside, Kilternan, Leopardstown, Ballyogan & Glenamuck

This week, the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Road Maintenance team presented their Road Maintenance Programme 20240-2026 to councillors. This includes footpath repairs, cycle track maintenance, road resurfacing and other minor works. See below what’s planned over the next 3 years, by area and some notes on other things I’ve asked to be added onto the Road Maintenance Programme for 2024-2026.

Road Maintenance Budgets 2022-2024

As you can see below a sizeable budget gets spent on all aspects of road resurfacing by DLR. I’ve been happy to support each of these budgets each year especially as we’ve managed to more than double the Footpath Upgrades budget over the past 2 years. I would be happy to raise more council revenue to expand all of these maintenance programmes along with more tree planting, parks services, library services etc. I have voted in favour of raising more council revenue each year but unfortunately the majority of votes have always gone the other way.

Council road maintenance budgets each year

Ballinteer

  • Woodpark – Minor road resurfacing in 2024, 2025 and 2026
  • Mayfield Terrace – Minor road resurfacing in 2025
  • Harolds Grange Road – Minor road resurfacing in 2025

I have also asked about the remaining footpaths in Pine Valley and Woodpark (The Avenue) that are due to be resurfaced and hope to get these formally on the programme.

Sandyford/Balally

  • Sandyford Business District – Footpath resurfacing in 2024, 2025 and 2026
  • Balally estate – Footpath resurfacing in 2024
  • Path behind St Olaf’s NS – Cycle track resurfacing in 2024
  • Blackthorn Road, Sandyford – Major road resurfacing in 2025
  • Sandyford Road, Balally – Major road resurfacing in 2025 and 2026
  • Moreen Estate (part of) – Footpath resurfacing; Minor road resurfacing in 2025 and 2026
  • Wedgewood (part of) – Major road resurfacing in 2026
  • Heather Road (part of), Sandyford BD – Minor road resurfacing in 2025
  • Burton Hall Road, Sandyford BD – Minor road resurfacing in 2026

There are footpaths around Clonard and Wesley Heights that I have requested maintenance on that I’ve gotten a positive response back on and these will be done even if they’re not written on the programme. Including the below:

Stepaside

  • Belarmine Avenue – Cycle track resurfacing in 2024 and 2025
  • Enniskerry Road – Major road resurfacing in 2024 and 2025
  • Village Road, Aikens Village – Cycle track resurfacing in 2024 and 2025; Major road resurfacing in 2024 and 2025

Great to see resurfacing of the remaining cycle tracks on Belarmine Avenue and Village Road which were previously damaged by trees. The initial resurfacing happened in 2022 after I was non-stop requesting it in 2021.

I have recently been trying to get the fooptaths in Sandyford Hall improved because of how busy they get at peak times. I’ll keep pushing this and I have engaged with residents in Sandyford Hall about the possibility of adding an additional footpath alongside the green to alleviate “pedestrian traffic congestion”.

Kilternan/Glencullen/Leopardstown

  • Glenamuck Road – Minor road resurfacing in 2024 (will be fully redone within the Glenamuck Distributor Road project)
  • Ballybetagh Road – Minor road resurfacing in 2024
  • The Gallops – Minor road resurfacing in 2024

I’ve asked for footpaths in Leopardstown Heights, The Gallops and Leopardstown Valley to be resurfaced especially ones that have been damaged by trees.

I’ve just summarised road maintenance in or next to the areas I represent. You can download the full Road Maintenance Programme 2024-2026 here which has all the areas across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. Any more footpaths, cycle tracks or roads you’d like added to the programme?
